Transforming travel stops for today’s needs

We recently attended the annual NACS event which was held in Las Vegas this year. In
the education sessions a lot of attention was placed on generative AI, and how this can
be deployed in the rest stop/convenience store business sector. There is no doubt that
Artificial intelligence (AI) will over time transform highway rest stops in powerful ways,
making them more efficient and tailored to travelers’ needs. Based on the NACS
sessions, here’s a deeper look at how each AI innovation could transform travel centers and rest stops.
- Starting with ChatGPT for Business Operations: For businesses new to AI, ChatGPT offers an accessible starting point, supporting tasks like drafting job descriptions, policies, and customer communication. A rest stop could use ChatGPT to craft targeted marketing content that resonates with its audience or generate employee surveys that improve team feedback. Retailers like IKEA have already integrated similar chatbots to handle routine customer questions and streamline support, freeing staff for more complex interactions.
- Customizing Product Selection, Pricing, and Personalization: AI systems can analyze purchasing data across various travel stops to help managers adjust stock based on local demands. For example, a rest stop in a high-traffic tourist area might stock local souvenirs and offer personalized snack recommendations, while one near business hubs could offer fresh coffee and quick meal options. Dynamic pricing can automatically adjust prices based on demand and availability, much like Amazon’s pricing algorithm, creating a competitive yet profitable pricing strategy.
- Enhancing Safety and Security: AI-powered surveillance tools can detect unusual activities, alert staff to suspicious behavior, and monitor real-time footage, allowing for proactive security responses. For example, airports use similar technology to flag unattended bags, while retail stores like Walmart employ AI to spot shoplifting attempts in real-time. In rest stops, AI could monitor areas like parking lots, which are prone to loitering and vandalism, and automatically alert security personnel, creating a safer environment.
- Boosting Employee Hiring and Morale: AI-powered hiring tools can help rest stops find employees whose skills and experience best fit each role, reducing turnover and improving service quality. Starbucks, for example, uses AI to personalize employee training, creating custom learning paths based on individual strengths and areas for improvement. AI tools can also offer real-time feedback, flagging potential burnout, and enabling managers to support employees proactively — boosting morale and retention.
- Streamlining Infrastructure and Maintenance: AI-driven predictive maintenance systems ensure that key amenities are always in top condition. For instance, Hilton Hotels uses predictive maintenance to prevent unexpected equipment failures, reducing downtime and increasing guest satisfaction. Similarly, a rest stop could use AI to monitor restroom cleanliness, detect faulty equipment, and schedule repairs for EV chargers before they break down, thus maintaining a positive experience for visitors.
By integrating AI, rest stops will offer enhanced services, improve operations, and
ensure both customer and employee satisfaction. At Pitpalazzo we intend to implement
AI technology as much as possible, and soon we will explore this in more detail, and
report on it on our website and social media channels. Let us know how you are
planning to implement AI, if at all, and how and where you plan to start…
